Warhammer 40,000 vs VOID
Here I'm comparing WH40k 2nd edition to the current (only) version of VOID. Why 2nd and not 3rd? I don't have 3rd, and I've been told that it's not as good.
First off, WH40k is obviously a lot bigger and more expansive, but that's not the point. The point is: Which PLAYS better?
WH40k 2nd is made up of about four books. VOID is only one book which is free from the I-KORE website and which is really only about 14 pages in length.
This means that the VOID rules are obviously a lot simpler, right? Well, almost. The VOID rules ARE simpler, but they still give you just as much in terms of gameplay/strategy.
Bad point for VOID: The mini's are hard to find, since they are manufactured solely in the UK. Try Colossal Games for some great deals on both VOID and 40k.
Another bad point for VOID: I recently bought a set of Sandrunners and there was a leg missing, but it had an extra head. I don't know if this is common, but with 40k, I usually get an extra of something (weapons, accessories, body parts), but never a missing part.
So what's the biggest difference between the two? While 40k is many different species, VOID is all humans except for the Koralon, which are strange bug/human hybrid. So, if you hate painting human skin, but dislike giant worms, you're out of luck when it comes to VOID.
Good point for VOID: the two main vehicles: The Korvus and the Tiger APC can both be used with any of the human armies. With 40k, a few can be used interchangeably (Rhino, Predator), with a few races (armies), but not many.
Another good point: I just plain like how they color-code the packages. It makes finding your army easy. For instance, I play Junkers, so I look for red packages. If you played VASA, you'd look for blue ones. Neat idea.
So when it comes down to it: If you want a huge (sometimes too huge) universe with lots of races to choose from, psychic powers, and very comprehensive rules, go for WH40k. I reckon it's guaranteed to be around for awhile too.
If you like playing humans (or worm monsters =o), lots of really nice models (sans missing parts), simple [free] rules that play as good as 40k, and are tired of Games Workshop's "Monopoly" take on everything, go for VOID, though I'm not sure it'll be around very long unless more people do play.
In conclusion, play both if you can, but at least buy some VOID mini's even if you play 40k, as I think they're better quality.
Cheers mates. -Rog
