My courses serve a variety of sociology
programs at Mesa State College |
I have published on the topics of sociology of the family, gender, and human sexuality.
My
sociology of family textbook, Families in Context, is now available from
Wadsworth Publishing. See their
description of the book. With an Adobe
Acrobat Reader you can view the preface, table of
contents, about the author, and other information from the front matter of
the text. You can also view a pre-publication version of the glossary or the references. Here is the book prospectus.
Also with an Adobe Acrobat Reader you can read three of my recent papers. "His and Her Marriages: Are His Really Better?" uses General Social Survey and World Values Survey data to compare happiness of married and single men and women . "Is There a Post-Industrial Family Form: An Exploration Using Global Data" compares societies in terms of their level of development and their family forms and values. “College Teaching Styles by Gender” uses a recent survey of MSC faculty to compare the teaching styles of men and women, by the discipline they teach.
Dr. Cummings, Dr. Wilhelm, and I—with the help of several students—recently completed a survey for the Civic Forum. The survey dealt with environmental issues in Mesa County. We hope to make results of the survey public very soon.
I am
I am also serving on the Executive Committee of the Western Social Science Association.
The National Council on Family Relations, if which I am a member, put me on the Reuben Hill Awards Committee. This group selects the recipient of an annual award for the best published article that deals with research and theory about families.
For more information, see my Resumé.
I'm not related to the coffee folks, although I do enjoy their
product. I was born in Salida,
Colorado, and grew up in Meeker,
Colorado. I hold a B.A. in Psychology, an M.A. in Sociology, and a Ph.D. in
Sociology, all from the University of
Colorado, Boulder. I came to Mesa College in 1974, the first year of its
transition from community college to four-year college. I have two adult
daughters, India and Verine, and one deceased son, Scott. I am happily
remarried, and have wonderful step children, grandchildren, and
step-grandchildren. I also have a rescued greyhound named Sammy.
My
favorite outdoor activity is mountain biking. The
photo at the top of this page, taken by Dr. Jessica Miller, captures me on the
Mary’s Loop Trail.
I've lately discovered that playing in the river can also be a lot of fun. Gig Leadbetter’s photo catches me jumping into the Colorado River in the Black Rocks section between Loma and West Water.
Last I competed in my first triathlon. I was really, really slow. But I finished way ahead of all those folks who never tried.
I have been a Denver Bronco fan longer than John Elway has been alive. Now that Stockton and Malone are gone, my support for the Utah Jazz is waning. I’d be Denver fan if they had a real team.
I enjoy reading mystery and thriller novels. When I have the time, I like cooking. I like eating whether I have the time or not.
