At Mesa State College, percussion students enjoy opportunities to study music in a multitude of styles and contexts. Our small studio size ensures that you will receive ample individual attention, perform frequently in a variety of ensembles, and study with a professor from the very beginning of your college studies.

Private percussion lessons meet the needs of students studying at intermediate to advanced levels. All plans of study are tailored to each individual student, with the goal of encouraging artistic growth in the student’s strongest areas and gaining complete proficiency in all fields of percussion. Instruction includes snare drum, keyboard percussion, timpani, drum set, multiple percussion, orchestral excerpts, and hand drum technique.  All students, whether majoring in performance, education, or liberal arts, study with Dr. Darin Kamstra, Director of Jazz Studies and Percussion, from the beginning of their freshman year. Percussion lessons are also available, space permitting, to non-music majors who perform in a music department ensemble.

Monthly technique classes present basic to advanced technical concepts on all major percussion instruments, including snare drum, timpani, keyboard percussion, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, congas, bongos, and drum set.
