Kamstra, Director of
Jazz Studies and Percussion at Mesa State College,
presented clinics at many regional high schools over the course of the
2007-2008 academic year, including clinics at Roaring Fork,
Montezuma-Cortez, Grand Junction,
Fruita-Monument, Arvada, Arvada West, Rifle, Coal Ridge,
Columbine, Standley Lake, Conifer, Lewis-Palmer,
Palisade, Central, Lyons, Windsor, Skyline, Brighton, Cherry
Creek, Thompson Valley, Mountain Vista, Golden, Bennett, Rangeview,
Gateway High Schools.
He also presented clinics at the Western Colorado Percussion Festival
in October 2007 and the Colorado Percussive Arts Society Day of
Percussion at Mesa State College in May 2008.
In the fall of 2007, Dr. Kamstra directed the Grand Junction Youth
Jazz Ensemble, an auditioned group of area high school students that he founded in 2006. In January 2007, he attended the Colorado Music Educators Association Clinic/Conference and performed in the Colorado IAJE Jazz Reading Band.
In February 2008, Dr. Kamstra served as an
adjudicator for the District 51 Solo and Ensemble Festival, and he was
a clinician for the Northern Nevada Day of Percussion in April 2008. In
addition to his continuing performances as principal timpanist with the
Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Kamstra performed a solo recital
at MSC in February 2008, a solo/ensemble recital at Lewis & Clark
College in Portland, OR, and a solo performance at the Northern Nevada
Day of Percussion. He also performed on drumset with the MSC Faculty
Jazz Quartet at the Colorado District 8 Honor Band, a special concert
at Two Rivers Winery, and at the Wells Fargo Art & Jazz Festival in
Grand Junction; furthermore,Dr. Kamstra had the pleasure of performing on vibes with the quarted and guest
drumset artist Ed Soph during the Western Colorado Percussion Festival. Finally, a work by Dr. Kamstra for percussion ensemble, Soundscapes 1-3, was published by Grand Mesa
Music Publishers.
